Affordable Hosting Options for a Small Non-Profit?

Hello everyone,

I’m looking for a reliable and budget-friendly web hosting provider for a small non-profit website. It’ll be under 10 GB and won’t need to handle high traffic.

Requirements:

  • Basic FTP access or cPanel for uploads
  • Affordable pricing (we’re still waiting on tax-exempt status approval)
  • SSL for basic security and credibility

Experience:
I have a background in HTML, CSS, SEO, and site management, so I’m just after a simple, solid hosting solution—nothing fancy needed.

Preferences:
I haven’t used major providers like GoDaddy for a long time, so open to any suggestions or promotions that might help. I’m fine with paying taxes until our tax-exempt status is approved.

Thank you in advance for your suggestions!

SSL is pretty much a requirement now. Your site might not be indexed well without it, so it’s a good move.

Good point. I meant more that we aren’t handling sensitive info, but you’re right; it’s really a must-have these days.

@Kamden
Exactly, and you can get SSL free in most places now.

What’s your budget? Also, do you prefer to pay monthly or annually? I’d avoid GoDaddy—there are better options out there.

Looking to stay under $100 per year. I’ve seen plans as low as $1–$6 per month, and someone mentioned some places offer discounts for non-profits, so I’m looking into that.

DreamHost has a free plan for non-profits that even includes a free domain registration. Might be worth checking out.

Thanks! I’ll definitely look into it.

I’ve been in web development for over 30 years and have tried tons of hosting companies. TrentaHost stands out—they’re secure, fast, and affordable. Support is amazing, even if you need help late at night. Highly recommended! https://trentahost.com/

The sidebar lists some well-rated hosts. I can recommend KnownHost personally—they have fast servers and great support. I’d avoid GoDaddy and EIG-owned companies if possible.

Agreed! I’ve had a good experience with Nixihost after trying Bluehost and HostGator in the past.

Have you considered using GitHub Pages along with Jekyll? It’s a good option if you’re mainly publishing static content.

I’ve used GitHub Pages but would prefer my own domain name. Not familiar with Jekyll—can you tell me a bit about it?

Are you planning to use a CMS? If it’s just static HTML, CSS, and JavaScript files, GitHub Pages or Cloudflare Pages could host it for free.

No CMS, just static pages with info about our projects, mission, contact, and about pages. No e-commerce or user accounts, just info.

@Kamden
Perfect. With only static content, free hosting is a real option. Cloudflare Pages or GitHub Pages are solid choices.

And by the way, a CMS can help with easy updates even for static content—just a thought.

I’ve used Hobohost for low-traffic sites. Not sure how it would perform with a ton of visitors, but it’s affordable at around $16–$18 a year. Worth a look until you’re ready to scale up.

If you get a domain from GoDaddy, they throw in a free one-page builder, which can be handy for a basic site setup.

I might be able to help with hosting on my own plan. Happy to set up a cPanel account or WordPress for you if needed. Let me know how I can support your cause.
