Hosting Company’s Cert Expired, Now Their CPanel is Self-Signed. How Concerned Should I Be?

Hello people…

I noticed something odd with my hosting provider’s cPanel today. I had a tab open that hadn’t reloaded yet, and it was showing a normal certificate chain through cPanel and Komodo, with today’s date. However, about twelve hours ago, I checked again, and now the certificate is self-signed.

I understand that this could be a result of the hosting company’s certificate expiring, but I’m wondering how concerned I should be.

Aside from the obvious question of how this reflects on the hosting provider’s reliability, do I need to avoid logging into my cPanel until they renew the certificate? Or is it safe to assume this is just a temporary issue and not necessarily an indication of a hacked hosting provider?

It used to work, but now it says it’s self-signed, making it untrustworthy (similar to a manufactured security pass). This could be because your website’s security certificate has expired, or there is an error with the website’s settings. It probably isn’t a major deal, but it’s wise to be cautious. Do not make major changes to your website, such as changing passwords, until the situation has been resolved.
