Looking to Buy a Domain Name… Any Suggestions?

I’m planning to start a website to write reviews on Amazon products and could use some advice on the best place to buy a domain. I’d really appreciate honest answers so I can make the right choice and not end up regretting it.

I usually recommend these options: porkbun, namecheap, google domains, gandi, namesilo, internet.bs, and uniregistry.

@Fiona
Out of these, which would you say is the best and why?

I’m a student, so I often switch registrars when they run promotions. Porkbun is the one I usually recommend to friends because of its simple pricing and email forwarding. NameSilo is good too, but the layout can be confusing for beginners.

I also like Namecheap. Uniregistry has higher prices on some domains, and I haven’t tried Gandi or Internet.bs, but I’ve heard good things.

I use Cloudflare for DNS, so no matter where I register, I don’t have to worry about DNS settings. This also means I don’t have to log in to the registrar every time I make a change, which reduces the risk of hacking or phishing.

@Fiona
Thanks for the helpful info! Much appreciated.

Try looking up your domain on each site. Personally, I like NameSilo because it’s cheap and includes privacy by default.

I’d avoid them—they charged me 30 days early for a domain I was in the process of transferring. NameSilo has been great, so I’d go with them.

Did you have auto-renew on by any chance?

To compare prices, check out tld-list.

I’ve been moving my domains from Namecheap to Porkbun because of the price difference. All I need is WHOIS privacy, two-factor authentication, and a simple interface, so renewal cost matters most.

Another option is Cloudflare, which now has an at-cost registrar. But keep in mind you have to use their DNS servers, which isn’t an issue if you’re already using Cloudflare, but something to consider.

@Embry
Cloudflare doesn’t handle country-specific TLDs yet. They’re fine for .com, .net, etc., but if you want a country-specific domain, they’re not an option yet.

+1 for NameSilo!

Why do you prefer NameSilo over the others?

Cheap and straightforward.

I’ve used Namecheap for over a decade. Their support is great, and I’ve never had an issue.

But I wouldn’t recommend hosting with them—just my experience.

I’ve had no problems with their shared hosting. What didn’t work for you?

@Emory
Speed was my main issue. I switched to another host that offered free SSL, which Namecheap didn’t provide back then.

Got it. My sites are pretty lightweight, so bandwidth hasn’t been an issue for me, but I can see how that might be a problem.

Porkbun is my go-to. It’s easy to use and super cheap!

+1 for Namecheap!

I usually go with Google Domains or Namecheap.
