Should I transfer my domain from Dynadot?

I recently bought a domain through Dan.com, and they had me set up an account with Dynadot to transfer the domain there. I’ve never used Dynadot before, and I’m wondering if I should move the domain to a different registrar before I start building my ecommerce site.

I plan to use the domain with Shopify. My other ecommerce domain is registered with Network Solutions, and although I’ve never had issues with them, they are more expensive than other registrars.

Any advice?

I’ve been using Dynadot for a while and have transferred most of my important domains there. They’ve been solid, so your domain should be fine staying with them.

Dynadot is much better than Network Solutions, which is overpriced and notorious for upselling. They’re owned by Newfold Digital, which runs some of the worst hosting brands out there.

When you bought the domain through Dan.com, it came from the aftermarket, and to get it to you faster, the seller gave you an internal push. This avoids the transfer process, so you have control over the domain sooner. However, the domain might be under a 60-day ICANN lockout if it was recently registered or if the contact info was updated.

You’ll be free to transfer the domain after 60 days if the lockout is in place, but otherwise, you can transfer right away if you want.

Here’s what you should do:

Now that you have control of the domain at Dynadot, make sure to update the WHOIS contact info with your details (keep the privacy on). If the contacts haven’t been updated, go ahead and do that, and if you want the option to transfer, make sure to opt out of the 60-day lock when updating the contact info.

If the domain is already locked for 60 days, unfortunately, you’ll have to wait until the lock expires to transfer it.

I’ve been using Dynadot for 15 years, and they’re a strong and reliable registrar. No issues!
