Seeking Advice for Launching a New Website After 20+ Years

I haven’t owned a domain or managed a website in over 20 years. While I’m technically proficient in *NIX, OpenStack, Kubernetes, and hardware, my experience with web design is outdated—I used Microsoft FrontPage and Perl back in the day, though I haven’t touched Perl in years.

I’m planning to set up a simple website, and the domain I want is available. I’m looking for advice on the web design part. The site will be a basic entry page with text, a couple of images, and a box to collect email addresses. After validating the email, users will be sent a link to a form where they can enter data and optionally upload a few images. This data will be stored on the server, which I’ll periodically retrieve via SFTP. I’d also like to set up a couple of email addresses associated with the domain.

I’m interested in learning to develop the site myself, but I’m also open to paying for development if necessary. I’d like this project to be low-maintenance in the long run, though I can invest some time upfront.

Details:

  • Monthly Budget: Flexible, but I’m considering Knownhost’s $6.47/month plan. Does this plan include shell access (not root)?
  • Location: North America
  • Type of Site: Simple, undecided on specifics
  • Expected Traffic: Low, likely a few hundred visits per month
  • Linux/Infrastructure Experience: Yes
