Should I stay away from BlueHost?

Hey everyone,

Edit: I’m in Canada, not sure if that makes a difference.

I just bought a domain through Google Workspaces, and they gave me Privacy Protection for free to keep my info private on the WHOIS database.

Since Google doesn’t offer web hosting, I looked at BlueHost to link my domain/site. There’s a checkbox asking if I want to add an extra layer of privacy for $16.18/year.

But Google already keeps my info private. If I don’t check that box, will it change anything? Can they override Google’s settings?

Bonus Question: I’m not really planning to use the site yet, just want a custom business email linked to Gmail through Workspaces. Is there a better or cheaper host than BlueHost for this purpose? Thanks!

BlueHost is awful. Avoid them at all costs.

Yep, they’re part of EIG. Stay away.

End of story.

BlueHost thinks your domain is hosted with them and is trying to upsell a service most other domain providers give for free. Says a lot about their quality.

In the world of cheap hosting, everyone’s advice will be biased, but generally, I wouldn’t recommend BlueHost.

Why do you even need web hosting if you’re just using email? What’s wrong with Google Workspace?

Hey, I want a business email, not an “@gmail.com” one.

For example, “contact@mybusinessname.com.” Do I need hosting for that? I’d love to avoid it if I can.

@Austin
Nope, you don’t need hosting if you’re just using Google for email.

Bonus tip: Google includes a basic website with business email, so you could have a simple landing page to make your email look more legit.

@Maya
Wow, I didn’t notice that. Thanks!

@Austin
I forgot that the free tier is also called Google Workspace. You’ll need at least the paid Business Starter plan.

It includes an email address that works with your domain, and it’s better than what most hosting companies offer—especially for spam protection.

@Austin
Yeah, you just need to register the domain and point the MX records to Google (or whichever email provider you’re using). Also, set up DKIM and SPF records to reduce spam issues.

I wish I knew about this forum before signing up with BlueHost. Their cPanel is so confusing. I switched to NixiHost and it’s so much simpler. Great support too.

Definitely don’t use BlueHost. They’re one of the worst hosting companies in terms of service, performance, and support. Even GoDaddy is better.

I’ve been with BlueHost since 2008, and I’m still with them just because I’m too lazy to move my stuff. Their email service is solid, which is why I stay. But if I had to start over, I’d probably go with Google or Microsoft for email hosting and handle the rest myself.

I used to work for BlueHost. Stay far away.

Can anyone explain why? I’m looking for a better WordPress hosting provider.

Check out KnownHost. They’re affordable and have great support. Only one small 3-minute outage this month so far.

BlueHost is a terrible idea.

Use WHC.ca and pay in Canadian dollars to save some money!
