What are some common issues or drawbacks users face with HostGator hosting services?

Have you guys heard about the nightmare experiences with HostGator? It’s like they’ve hit rock bottom in terms of service. I’ve been with them for about 15 years, had a dedicated server and all, but things went downhill fast. They stopped supporting their own servers, and now, they’re just a mess.

Recently, my server got hit with malware, and guess what? HostGator shut down my website until I fixed it. But here’s the kicker – my passwords are ironclad, and my personal computer is clean, so the malware had to come from somewhere, probably from HostGator itself. But when I asked for help, they basically shrugged.

Their solution? Pay for SiteLock. So, I did, and it found nothing, until magically it did, but only after I chased them up. And guess what? Dead silence after that. It’s been a week, and I can’t even reach them. The chat doesn’t load, phone calls go unanswered, and their email? It’s like shouting into the void.

So, any recommendations for a decent web host?

If you’ve got a managed server, it doesn’t mean you’ve got a managed website. Neglecting website maintenance and updates leaves it vulnerable to being compromised if any of its components have security issues.

Unless you’ve got a special deal with HostGator, you’re likely just getting server management services, which cover things like OS updates, software/package updates, server monitoring, etc. They won’t handle your website, just the server setup and upkeep.

But honestly, HostGator isn’t great, and there are plenty of other providers out there offering better service and more comprehensive solutions.

If you’re not savvy with website maintenance, make sure your new provider can handle it for you, but be prepared to pay extra on top of server maintenance fees.

Managing the website wasn’t an issue for me. I’ve been handling it for 25 years, with 15 of those years on HostGator. Everything was kept current, passwords were strong, and so on.

My brother, who’s a network security specialist, believes the problem stemmed from outdated server software, which is supposed to update automatically. When he checked the settings in WHM, he found that several critical parts of the server hadn’t been updated since I upgraded it two years ago.

When you purchase a managed server, it’s expected that your hosting provider will monitor it around the clock. It’s quite surprising to hear otherwise. I understand the importance of paid third-party malware check tools, which can be beneficial for clients. However, ultimately, it’s up to the customer to decide whether to opt for them or not.

Before switching to another provider, it’s crucial to thoroughly research the company reviews and ensure they genuinely offer managed web hosting solutions. A 15-year customer relationship is significant… If I were with HostGator, I’d do everything possible to assist you with your issue, including offering free proactive services.
